This course will focus on cultural, social and political issues linked to the construction of "modern" Latin American nations between 1850 and 1930. In our analyses of essays, narrations and plays, we will explore the relationship among capitalist expansion, social practices, cultural heritage and the emergence of local traditions in several countries of the subcontinent. Special emphasis will be placed on questions of "race", the legacy of native cultures, the role of women, the impact of European influence and the alternative ideologies of progress as presented by leading intellectuals of different nationality, theoretical background and ideological affiliation.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
