The purposes of this course are twofold: first, to use a range of theoretical and historical perspectives to examine the family as a social and cultural construct; second, to examine topics in U.S. society such as family formation and definition, the changing meanings of marriage and parenthood, marital dissolution, domestic violence, family power dynamics, the relationship of paid work and housework, the role of families in social reproduction, and feminist critiques of family and the role of the state and the economy in defining and supporting conceptions of family. Special attention will be paid to current policy debates and the role of the state and the economy in defining and supporting conceptions of family.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Four to six short papers, group presentation, and final exam.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office. Prerequisite: Sociology 151.
