Sociology and Social Theory
SOC 212 FA

Through reading, discussion and interpretation the course will critically examine the basic writings of social theorists who have influenced the practice of sociology. Beginning with the classic thinkers (including Marx, Du Bois, Weber, Gilman, Cooper, Freud, and Durkheim), the discussion will continue with subsequent thinkers who have influenced current theories of class, race, gender, sexualities, modernity and post-modernity, and globalization.

Emile Durkheim, SUICIDE
And selections from Charles Lemert, ed., SOCIAL THEORY-including Du Bios, Cooper, James, Wallerstein, Merton, Cesaire, Foucault, Habermas, Butler, Patricia Hill Collins, among others.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Short papers, group projects, final essay, full participation.

Students must have had SOC 151 to enroll in this course. This course is open to majors only.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
