A study of Tolstoy's and Chekhov's writings as dialogues with their times, including the dialogue between Chekhov and Tolstoy.

Chekhov, selected stories, SAKHALIN ISLAND, SEAGULL, UNCLE
VANYA, THREE SISTERS, THE CHERRY
ORCHARD, Selected letters.
Gorky, REMINISCENCES OF TOLSTOY AND CHEKHOV, LOWER DEPTHS.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Short papers and final exam.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Extensive reading, email exchange of discussion topics, active participation in class discussions.
