Academic Year 2002/2003
Pushkin
RUSS 250 FA
Pushkin's poetry brilliantly reflects the expressive potential of the Russian language. In its play with contemporary genres and styles, it also establishes Russian literature's central role in defining and redefining
Russian
culture. This course will read Pushkin both ways: as the "Pushkin-tour" of the Russian language's expressive potential and as Pushkin's creative articulation of Russian culture in the 1820s and 1830s. All readings will
be conducted in Russian. Lectures and discussions will be in Russian and English.
MAJOR READINGS
Pushkin, EVGENIJ ONEGIN MOTSART I SALIERI TSYGANY MEDNYJ VSADNIK POVESTI BELKINA LIRIKI Selected Reading: From critics and biographers: Tynianov, Tomashevsky, Jakobson, Mirsky, Lotman, Vinogradov, Nabokov,
