In this course we will discuss the early history of the Jewish people, the history of contemporary "world" powers and the relationships between them. We will examine the validity and limitations of Biblical, Mesopotamian, Classical and other sources as evidence, various interpretations of the evidence and study the political and other mechanisms that allowed the Jewish people to survive until the Hellenistic period and beyond.

A series of short papers, midterm paper, and a final exam.

This course fulfills the "Religion in Society" requirement.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
