Academic Year 2002/2003
Himalayan Buddhism
RELI 479 FA
This course considers the changing face of Buddhism across the Himalayas, from the far western regions of Ladakh and Zangskar in Indian Kashmir, to the eastern parts of Nepal and Bhutan. It will explore how Buddhism is
lived and experienced in practice and ritual, as opposed to how it is imagined in textual or doctrinal terms. Critical topics to be addressed in the study of Himalayan Buddhism include shamanism, monasticism, merit
making,
feminism, tourism, and social change.
