Psychology of Poverty
PSYC 353 FA

This course will present the antecedents, responses (political, governmental, personal, etc.), and effects of poverty. We will discuss various approaches for solving problems associated with poverty both in the US and abroad, as well as historical views of poverty and of the poor throughout history.

Articles

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Weekly response papers, which will address readings, discussions, and visitors (2/3 of the grade), and a final paper (1/3 of the grade).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Interview/volunteer work with a person/professional who works with the poor in any capacity (e.g., homeless shelter, food kitchen, welfare agents, etc.).

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
