Introduction to Cognitive Psychology

This course provides an introduction to cognitive psychology. You will learn about the psychology of human perception, attention, memory, language, thinking (including problem solving and reasoning), and consciousness. The material will cover the processes by which researchers develop theories and test evidence. An important part of this methodology concerns the manner in which knowledge of brain function can illuminate theories of cognition. Special attention will also be paid to ways in which the findings of cognitive psychology can inform practical issues in everyday life. Class activities will include lectures, discussions, demonstrations, in-class experiments, and practice on problem-solving exercises.

MAJOR READINGS

One textbook in Cognitive Psychology and several articles from research journals.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Three examinations and several assignments.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This a core course in the Cognitive area. PSYC105 is recommended. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
