Kierkegaard's Dialectic of Existence

Kierkegaard's evocation of the self in its aesthetic, ethical, and religious transformations is studied through a close reading of his major texts.
MAJOR READINGS
Soren Kierkegaard: EITHER/OR, vol. I & II FEAR AND TREMBLING, REPETITION, THE CONCEPT OF ANXIETY, PHILOSOPHICAL FRAGMENTS, THE SICKNESS UNTO DEATH
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Short themes on preassigned topics will fall due every week. A 10-15 page term paper will fall due during exam week.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Permission to join this seminar will automatically be granted to students who have taken a course in the philosophy of religion OR modern Christian thought (e.g. RELI220) OR modern philosophy (e.g. PHIL203). Others must
receive explicit permission from
the instructor. By interview.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
Drop/Add form to the Registrar's
Office.
