Beginning: Introduction to raga scales and talas (metrical cycle) using Indian sol-fa syllables in the context of composed exercises and simple compositions. Intermediate and advanced: Instruction will be in-depth exploration of varied and more complicated song forms and ornamentation.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Regular practice of lessons, periodic reading assignments, memorization of technical exercises and compositions. At the end of two semesters, students will give an informal presentation of their work.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Rudimentary sense of pitch and rhythm is required. Interested students should sign up in room 313 Music Studios.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
