This course is designed to give a thorough grounding in the basic compositional techniques of tonal harmony, part-writing (counterpoint), and formal structures of the "common practice" era in Western art music. LECTURES (T,TH) will introduce concepts on a theoretical level and provide guidance of ways in which they can be meaningfully applied to actual music. EAR-TRAINING SECTIONS (M,W), led by a TA, will focus on the development of aural and keyboard skills.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
