Haydn and Mozart as Cultural Constructs
MUSC 121 SP

This course is an intensive exploration of the music and the lives of Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, examining how these composers both shaped and reflected the culture of the 18th century. This course will give detailed consideration to their musical works; listening strategies will be developed through the examination of compositions in various genres. The course will also investigate how the images of these artists have been fashioned and refashioned according to the changing requirements of European society. No prior training in music is presumed.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Students will be given weekly listening assignments, which will be the subject of periodic examinations. Written assignments will focus on methods of scholarly research, documentation, and argumentation.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
