Introductory Calculus, Part I
MATH 117 FA

This course is designed to introduce basic ideas and techniques of differential calculus. Students should enter with sound pre-calculus skills but with very limited or no prior study of calculus. Topics to be considered include differential calculus of algebraic, exponential, and logarithmic functions. (Integral calculus will be introduced in MATH118).

MAJOR READINGS

Hughes-Hallett, Gleason et.al., CALCULUS: SINGLE VARIABLE, 3rd edition.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Frequent assignments, weekly projects, three tests, and a cumulative final examination.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

The first class meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 4.

Use of a graphing calculator, TI-82 or later, is required. A combination of lecture/presentation and work in small groups. All small groups will meet Tuesdays 12:00-1:00pm. The format is non-traditional, with group work and frequent use of technology. Regular attendance and participation is required. Students may not get credit for both MATH117 and MATH121 and are encouraged to seek departmental advice about which course to ta ke. The electronic wait list will not be used - please contact Adam Fieldsteel if you are interested in being placed on a wait list.

Students wishing to be admitted to the course should fill out a questionnaire, available in the Math Office (Scien ce Center 655), by 3:00 p.m. on April 10. By 5:00 p.m. on April 11 students will be notified by e-mail whether or not they have been admitted. This course is not open to Junior or Senior majors.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
