This course will explore the impact of non-governmental organizations and international funding organizations on Latin American indigenous communities and other ethnic minorities. It will also examine the effects of community demands on the evolution of international and national development policies geared toward these communities. While the regional focus of the course rests heavily on the Andes, broader questions of development, globalization, and human rights throughout Latin America will be addressed.

MAJOR READINGS

At least five books and approximately 10 articles and chapters

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Six short response papers (2-3 pp)
One class presentation
One final paper (15-20 pp)

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Preference will be given to LAST and ANTH majors, with special consideration to GOVT majors.
