Indigenous Religions of the Americas

This course introduces students to the study of Indigenous religions and discusses problems of comparative religious analysis. We will focus on Native peoples' worldviews as they are expressed through art, architecture, literature, music, mythology, ritual, health practices, and ecology. Readings and lectures will draw upon examples from Mesoamerica, northern Mexico, and the Western United States. In each case, students will be asked to consider issues of colonialism, "tradition", religious change, and representations of otherness.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Midterm exam, a final exam, and a paper due at the end of the semester ranging from seven to ten pages.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
