Post-Modern Theory with an Historical Intent
HIST 318 FA

Crosslistings:
COL 218

This seminar will examine the possibility of employing recent advances in "post-modern" philosophy in the service of rigorous historical investigation. Can post-modern theory be used historically or are these two terms antithetical? We will explore the origins of post-modernism and its various incarnations (in post-structuralism, post-colonialism, gender studies, and feminist theory) and then look to apply these methodologies in specific historical case studies.

Authors to be read may include (but will not be limited to): Theodor Adorno, Etienne Balibar, Homi Bhabha, Walter Benjamin, Maurice Blanchot, Helene Cixous, Paul De Man, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Luce Irigaray, Jacques Lacan, Jean-Francois Lyotard, Jean-Luc Nancy, Friedrich Nietzsche.
