Academic Year 2002/2003

19th century Britain & Empire
HIST 296 FA

This course will introduce students to fundamental aspects of the forces and transformations that marked the development of Great Britain as a global empire in the nineteenth century. During these years, the world economy was built around Britain, which temporarily rose to a position of global influence and power unparalleled by a state of its relative size before or since. We will examine the interplay of economic, social and political factors that shaped British imperial policies, both at home and in the colonies, through a study of different regions affected by British rule, including case studies of southern Africa, India and Pakistan, China, South America, Ireland, and the Caribbean.
