This course offers an introduction to the cultural and intellectual traditions that helped shape America between the 17th-century and the Civil War. The course will introduce students to a range of primary sources, including objects, paintings, and photographs. Among the topics to be considered: Indian-white relations, family life, gun culture, the domestication of the wilderness, religious revivals, slavery, the rise of the city, and the Civil War. There will be two film screenings (THE SCARLET LETTER and Ken Burns's THE CIVIL WAR) and one field trip (to view a Colt firearms collection in Hartford).
