Academic Year 2002/2003
The First Global Culture: Greater Britain from Jamestown to New Delhi
HIST 206 FA
The relationship between architecture and society has always been crucial to a full understanding of any civilization. The built environment is the most obvious and most permanent form of a nation's cultural history,
the
ultimate tangible display of core beliefs. Members of this course will look at the human and natural forces that have molded buildings and will reflect on the architecture as an expression of contemporary political and
social
ideas. Maps, city plans, photographs, and paintings will illustrate the richly interwoven tapestry of British people and buildings overseas from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries, when Britain grew to be the
dominant
global power.
