Comparative Constitutional Interpretation
GOVT 373 FA
This course examines constitutional interpretation, conceived as a broadly political, legal, and literary enterprise, in the United States, The Federal Republic of Germany, Canada, Japan, Australia, Italy, Ireland, and
sometimes
India. Our purpose is to understand how a variety of constitutional democracies have chosen to conceptualize, and to resolve, a number of basic problems inherent in the ideal and practice of constitutional government.
MAJOR READINGS
The main reading in the course will consist of judicial decisions from the constitutional courts of the various countries. Students will be required to purchase a collection of photocopied materials.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
There will be two research papers of intermediate length.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
Drop/Add form to the Registrar's
Office.
