Despite rapid urbanization during the last several decades, tens of millions of Latin Americans still live in rural areas. Political questions pertaining to rural society continue to be of critical importance, both for those more directly affected by them and others interested in preserving the region's cultural and biological diversity. This course will explore a variety of contentious social and political issues facing the Latin American rural sector, including land reform, commercialization and technological change in agriculture, deforestation, poverty, and the problems faced by indigenous peoples.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
