German Classical Literature (Literatur der Deutschen Klassik)

This course will include close reading of selected texts from the works of Johann V. Goethe and Friedrich Schiller, the two authors who have defined the German literary and cultural traditions of the last 150 years. Poetry, prose, and dramatic works will be read and discussed in class.

MAJOR READINGS

Among the works read will be Goethe's NOVELLE and FAUST, Schiller's WALLENSTEIN, and selected prose and poetry by both authors.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Several oral reports and papers.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Regular attendance and participation in class discussion are expected.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
