German Opera, 1762 to 1933

The course will concentrate on representative German operas from the 1760s to 1933. The emphasis will be on works of Mozart, Wagner, and the earlier 20th-century and their links to the historical moments and places in which they were created. Although occasional readings (such as Wagner's OPERA AND DRAMA) will be required, this will be almost entirely a listening and viewing course.

Three papers, two oral reports, and a final take-home examination.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students should have some background in and enthusiasm for the Western Art Music of the nineteenth and early twentieth century.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
