This course is an introduction to the culture and history of medieval Europe in the 12th century. Topics will include the specific violences of the Angevin, Capetian, and Hohenstaufen dynasties; the origins of the courtly love-relationship as documented in the love songs of the troubadours and in the courtly romance; the fictional violence of the heroic epics; and the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture, especially in France.
