L'Amour et l'Obstacle
FREN 245 SP

This course will study a variety of plays, poetry, and novels, spanning the centuries, in each of which, and each in its particular way, love, faced with an obstacle to its realization, either proves or refutes the proverbial dictum, "amor omnia vincit," and the poetic assertion of Emily Dickinson: "That love is all there is/ Is all we know of love..."

Students will choose one of the optional read ings on which to write an essay.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Classroom presentations. 5 or 6 pp. paper on works not studied in class. Brief final exercise.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This is an introductory course intended for students who have completed FREN 215 or have placed out of FREN 215 through the placement test, but not taken more than one course in French beyond 215 and not yet studied abroad in a French-speaking country. Students who have already taken two courses in French beyond FREN 215 or studied abroad should take 300-level courses.

This course meets the pre-1800 requirement for the FRST major.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
