Four Myths of Modern Individualism: Don Quixote, Don Juan, Celestina the Bawd, & Lazarillo the Rogue

We will study four Spanish masterpieces (two novels, two plays) in their own right and as originators of four modern myths. They prompt questions about the function of myth, the definition of modernity, the meaning of individuality, and the vicissitudes of cultural influence, particularly as defined with respect to marginal, outlaw or outcast characters (including those who pass for lunatics, thieves, prostitutes, religious minorities, and unconventional women). Are great characters and literary masterpieces possible in the absence of a pathology or transgression?
