British Modernist Fiction
ENGL 328 SP

This course will examine the major novels of British modernism. Conventionally dated between 1890 and 1945, modernism was marked by radical experiments in literary form that transformed the shape and content of the novel. We will examine both the formal features of modernist literary technique and its recurrent preoccupation with the idea of modernity. In our effort to develop an understanding of the culture from which modernism emerged, we will focus on a number of key questions: How is modernism implicated in Britain's waning imperial fortunes? To what extent was it shaped by technological change? What relations does modernism have with popular culture?
