The Prose Poem & Other Hybrids
ENGL 327 FA

This course will begin with the purported birth of the prose poem in 19th-century France, but this traditional history will be complicated by other texts, from Sei Shonagon's 10th-century PILLOW BOOK to contemporary American works. We will also explore the role of hybrid texts (such as Aime Cesaire's NOTEBOOK OF A RETURN TO THE NATIVE LAND and Theresa Cha's DICTEE) in the history of the prose poem.

MAJOR READINGS

Readings will include Baudelaire's PARIS SPLEEN, Rimbaud's ILLUMINATIONS, Aime Cesaire's NOTEBOOK, Sei Shonagon's PILLOW BOOK, Theresa Cha's DICTEE, Rosmarie Waldrop's LAWN OF EXCLUDED MIDDLE, and much more.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Weekly responses, one short (5-7 page) midterm paper and one longer (7-10 page) final paper.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
