A survey of modern literary, critical and cultural theories. Emphasis on key concepts--such as language and textuality; identity, subjectivity and gender; power, knowledge, cultural institutions and the state; and key figures, such as Marx, Freud, Nietzsche, Saussure, Barthes, Gramsci, Benjamin, Foucault, Althusser, and Jameson.

MAJOR READINGS

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Several short papers - total of 15 pages.

This course meets the English Department's Theory requirement. COL majors may take this course on a pass-fail basis.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
