Contesting Marriage in Early Modern England
ENGL 271 FA

This course examines the struggle to define and regulate marriage and sexuality in Shakespeare and his contemporaries, focussing on the emergence of modern marriage and marriage and its doubles, broken nuptials and prostitution.

MAJOR READINGS

Selections from 16th-17th C conduct books and Sermons;
Shakespeare, Selected Comedies, OTHELLO;
Heyword, WOMAN KILLED WITH KINDNESS.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two papers.

This course meets the English department's historical knowledge and pre-1800 requirements.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
