Vices, Machiavels & Revengers: English Tragedy from "Mankind" to Marlow and Beyond
ENGL 261 SP
This course will trace the early history of English Tragedy from its origins to the great revenge plays of the Jacobean era. Organized both thematically and chronologically, it looks at the central conventions of the
Vice,
intelligencer (the Machiavel), and revenger in early modern drama. The course emphasizes the historical development of this tradition of character from a variety of medieval and classical sources.

There will be a mid-term and a final exam, two papers, and some smaller written assignments.

There will be film versions of some of these plays shown outside of class. Class attendance and participation is required. Participation is worth 10% of your grade. This course meets the English Department's pre-1800
requirement.
