History of the British Novel, Part II
ENGL 242 SP

In this course we will read major texts from the 19th and early 20th centuries, each one of which in some way re-defined what the "novel" was as a genre. Contexts will include advances in artificial intelligence, Darwinism, the vexed "woman question", the fragmentation of industrial society, the radical artistic movement of Impressionism, and the so-called "war to end all wars".

MAJOR READINGS

Charles Dickens, GREAT EXPECTATIONS;
Mary Shelley, FRANKENSTEIN;
George Eliot, MIDDLEMARCH;
Charlotte Bronte, JANE EYRE;
Henry James, THE SPOILS OF POYNTON;
Ford Madox Ford, THE GOOD SOLDIER;
Woolf, MRS. DALLOWAY
