Techniques of Fiction
ENGL 206 FA

An introduction to the elements of fiction and a range of contemporary styles, for people who want to write or simply to increase their understanding and appreciation of short stories.

MAJOR READINGS

Stories by some of the masters-Chekhov, Hemingway, de Maupassant, Poe - and by many American contemporaries, including Denis Johnson, Amy Bloom, Tobias Wolff, Jhumpa Lahiri, Junot Diaz, Mary Gaitskill, and Antonya Nelson.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Several short exercises in various elements of fiction and two short stories. Attendance at every class required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

May not be taken in addition to English 210, Fiction Now. May not be taken in the same semester as another writing course.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
