American Literature 1865-1945
ENGL 204 SP
Topics in this survey of American literature since the Civil War will include major prose writers and literary movements. We will make an effort to situate texts in their historical contexts.
MAJOR READINGS
The instructor reserves the right to determine the precise works to be read at a time much closer to the beginning of the course than is allowed under the current system of announcing courses; however, it is probable
that most of the following authors
will be represented: Chesnutt, Howells, Wharton, Twain, James, Crane, Gilman, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, Hurston, Cather, and Wright.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Midterm examination, a final examination and a final paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This will be a reading intensive course, and students will be expected to keep up with a demanding syllabus.
