Writing Verse
ENGL 160 SP

"The innocent eye sees nothing," goes one critical tag. The premise of this course is that only by a close study of our literary predecessors may we understand the resources available to us as contemporary poets. In helping each student to realize his or her individual voice, this course will combine free assignments with a study of (and exercises in) various forms and styles, as reflected in poetic practice from the 15th century to the present.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

No examination. Weekly journal writing assignments (poems); common-place book/journal; one or two short (3-5 pp.) critical essays. Weekly in-class discussion of student poems (1/2) and of published verse (1/2); regular individual teacher-student conferences also.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Manuscript submission (4-6 poems) required as application to the class; include the course number, your name, address, email address, and phone number. FAXES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. THis must be submitted to Sheila Kelleher (285 Court St.) by NOON on Monday, January 12, 2000. A list of those accepted into the class will be posted in the English Department office by the beginning of the semestet. This is a Drop/Add course.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
