Telling and Storytelling: An Introduction to Writing Creative Non-Fiction
ENGL 153 SP

Members of this seminar will focus on the creative essay in a variety of genres: memoir, the analytic meditation, reviews, and others. Using the techniques and strategies of addressing an audience (telling) along with the creation of character, atmosphere, and structure (storytelling), students will practice producing clear and distinctive statements of their experiences and views.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Students will be expected to write a great deal. On a weekly basis, this means completing writing assignments and informal written analyses of assigned readings, and revising work on assignments from previous weeks as necessary. In addition, students will complete three polished pieces, 6-8 pages in length. The final project will be an expanded version of one of these three pieces. There will be no examinations. Grades will be based equally on classroom participation and the completion and quality of written work.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students should be willing to share their work in peer-editing and guided workshops. Attendance is strictly required. Any student with more than three unexcused absences may be dropped from the course at any point during the semester. Any student who does not come to the first class meeting may, in accordance with EPC rules, be dropped from the course.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
