This course investigates various attempts to explain what narratives are, how some come into dominance, how others challenge that fact of domination, and how as a result narratives change historically. The course consists of three units: the first looks at formalist, structuralist, and post-structuralist models of narrative; the second considers accounts of the rise of the novel; the third samples marxist, feminist, racial, and postcolonial challenges to those master narratives.
