Eighteenth-Century Laughter
ENGL 108 SP

This course will trace the use of humor and laughter in eighteenth-century literature across three genres: poetry, drama, and prose. We will consider the rhetorical value of humor, the variations in humor between genres, and the changing nature of laughter over the century.

MAJOR READINGS

Joseph Andrews; three plays, including THE WAY OF THE WORLD; selections from prose and poetry.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

One long paper (approx. 10 pages); two short papers (approx. 5 pages)

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
