Research Seminar in Institutional Economics
ECON 394 SP

This research seminar, intended primarily for junior majors in economics, provides an opportunity for students to investigate the history and current practices of American institutional economics and to produce a substantial piece of written research in the field. The first nine weeks of the seminar will trace the history of American institutionalism through the twentieth century and introduce students to the work of several major writers in the institutional tradition. The remaining weeks will be primarily devoted to discussion of research done by the students.

MAJOR READINGS

Readings will include works by such authors as John R. Commons, Ian Macneil, Ronald Coase, Oliver Williamson, Richard Posner, Guido Calabresi, James Buchanan and Charles E. Lindblom.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Students will write several short papers during the early weeks of the seminar on the assigned readings, and a substantial research paper dealing with some aspect of the history of American institutionalism or comprising original research conducted within the institutional tradition.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Interested students will be encouraged to develop their research papers into senior honor theses.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
