This course explores the economic and social implications of moving from public to private ownership and from central planning to market-oriented production, allocation, and distribution. The course will analyze the transition experiences of China, Mongolia, Vietnam, and a number of central Asian countries, including Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. The questions to discuss will include: What have been their strategies, accomplishments, and future challenges? What are the common problems? What factors determine the speed of transition? It will also discuss the challenges facing North Korea, which is hesitating to begin the transition, with its economy rapidly deteriorating.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
