Public Finance (Lower Level)
ECON 222 SP

This course examines the role of government in the economy. The first part of the course examines government responses to market failure (externalities, public goods, and monopoly) as well as policies aimed at redistribution of income. The second part of the course is concerned with taxation, including tax incidence, distortions, and optimal taxation. The final part of the course is concerned with fiscal federalism (the division of responsibilities between higher and lower levels of government).

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Four Problem Sets (20%), Mid-Term Exam (20%), Final Exam (30%), Term Paper Prospectus (5%) and Term Paper (25%).

Students who have completed ECON312 may not receive credit for ECON222.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
