People are living longer, especially in developed countries, and the elderly are now a large and growing proportion of the population. The process of aging and the medical needs of the elderly are therefore receiving increased attention. This course will deal with current research on the biological basis of aging and on the diseases to which the elderly are particularly vulnerable. We will discuss the various changes that take place in the body with age. We will consider a variety of mechanisms proposed to account for the phenomenon of senescence and evaluate each in the context of the available experimental evidence. We will also reflect on possibilities for further extending the human life span.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
