Introductory Astronomy
ASTR 155 FA

This introductory course in astronomy has an emphasis on stars, galaxies, and the Universe. Stellar structure and evolution, galactic structure, normal and active galaxies, and cosmology will be covered. Current problems in astronomy that represent fundamental limitations of our knowledge about the universe will be highlighted. This course serves as a gateway to the major.

One textbook.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two hour exams, one final exam, and weekly problem sets.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This is a mathematically based introduction to astronomy for potential majors and others with a good science preparation. Calculus is used occasionally. Some knowledge of physics (a good high school course or introductory college course) is assumed.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
