Architecture I
ARST 435 SP

This course is a synthesis of fundamentals of design principles and introduction to design vocabulary, process methodologies and craft. Emphasis is placed on developing the students' ability to examine the relationship between production (the process of creating things) and expression (the conveying of ideas and meaning) involved in the making of architecture. The intent of the course is to develop the students' awareness and understanding of the built environment as a result of the investigations, observations, and inquiries generated in the studio.

MAJOR READINGS

Readings relevant to topics explored in each design project will be assigned.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Students will explore design concepts and methodologies through a series of five projects. They are expected to maintain a sketchbook as a diary of sketches and development of architectural thought.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Course fee: $100. Students are expected to attend all class sessions. Drawing I or similar background in freehand drawing suggested. This course is not open to first-year students.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
