This course explores the links between cinema, politics, and culture in the context of everyday social relations in West African societies. Concentrating on films from Senegal, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, and Mali, and taking a broadly historical and interpretive approach to African culture, the course discusses comparative and African aesthetics in relation to film aesthetics, the economics and politics of film production and distribution, and problems of meaning and interpretation in cinema.

Short projects, essays and a take home final examination.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

One social science and/or cinema course. Tuesday evening (7:30) screenings, throughout the term. Lab fee of $40.00 Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
