Cinema, Culture, and Politics in India

This course will explore the links between cinema, political culture, and society in India. Concentrating on Bengali and Hindi films and taking a broadly historical and symbolic interpretive approach to Indian culture, we shall explore Indian and comparative esthetics; economic and social contexts of film production; regional, alternative, and popular cinemas.

Short papers and/or presentations and a longer take home final.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

One social science and/or one cinema course LAB FEE OF $45.00 Tuesday evening screenings of films.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
