What is theory? What is the relation of feminism and theory? These large questions will be addressed in this course, which will focus on contemporary developments in feminist theory. We will consider how feminist theorists have understood the significance of sexual difference and will discuss how feminism is articulated with theories of representation, subjectivity, and history. In the process, we will attend to how difference, and differences work conceptually and politically, paying particu lar attention to the complex relations of gender, racial, and class differences.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two or three five page mid-term papers, one 10-12 page final paper; one oral presentation in class.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This course requires background in women's studies. Preference will be given to women's studies majors who have completed WMST101. Admission by permission of the instructor during preregistration in the spring for students on campus, and at the beginning of the fall semester to fill the places reserved for transfers and returning students. This course counts toward the English Department's Theory requirement.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
