This course is designed in three parts: First, students will study the major Afro-American playwrights from 1925 to present for structure (theme, plot, character, action) as well as the social and political environment of the play in its time. Special attention will be paid to August Wilson, George Wolfe and other emerging playwrights. Second, they will participate in an intensive workshop in the art of acting through practical studio investigation. This will be followed by a six-week period of rehearsal culminating in a full production of one of the plays studied.
