Advanced Seminar in Literature: The Culture of Drama
SPAN297 FA

Crosslistings: COL297

The purpose of this seminar is to raise questions about critical concepts and discourses, and about literary history. For 1996 the organizing topic will be "The Culture of Drama." What are the practices of drama, and how do these practices represent tensions and conflicts within the society? How do dramas create a space in which to contest the dominant values and practices of the culture? Why are violence and transgression so prevalent in the history of theater? Why has tragedy been regarded as superior to comedy? Our inquiries are directed primarily, but not exclusively, at Spanish theater of the "Siglo Oro."
